Is Big Data becoming the new Stalker?

What are we actually agreeing to when accepting 'Terms and Conditions'. As technology advances we as users are getting more conscious about our data and private information being collected and used and this could create challenges.

We have been talking a lot recently about 'Information systems' and 'Big Data' and how incorporating them into your business structure and strategy can be extremely beneficial but there is also many worries and concerns ethically and socially and today we are going to speak about that side of 'Big Data'.

Do you ever feel like your device is listening to you? have you spoken about a new product with friends and then minutes later and advert for that same product appears on your Facebook? Have you searched a brand/ piece of clothing once and then for a week you procced to have similar items be advertised to you? Have you ever received offers from your Tesco Clubcard based on items that you regularly purchase? Many of us have experienced at least one if not all of these scenarios and that is quite scary to think about.

our information is no longer private and confidential, it is being sold to groups so that we as users can be target marketed. It can be viewed as unethical, untrustworthy and exploitative which could tarnish existing customer relations and become a big problem for corporate companies in the future as society is becoming more socially aware. Not only is such private information being collected from big data but also their is growing concerns of how secured is this information? are users information being protected sufficiently to prevent it getting into the wrong hands?

These are just a small few examples of ethical and social concerns regarding 'Big Data' but these concerns alone can become a big problem for companies in the future and it is important for companies to be aware of but also us as users as to what we are actually agreeing to in the 'Terms and Conditions'.

Be sure to leave your feedback and any concerns you have with 'Big Data' and how its being used in the comment section.

I appreciate you guys reading my weekly blogs and as always thanks for reading,

Jake.
